Mini Tennis is divided into 3 different levels. A brief description is provided below with current LTA guidelines.
LTA age bands for year 1st September 2009 – 31st August 2010:
- Mini Red - 2002 or later
- Mini Orange - 2001
- Mini Green - 2000
Mini Red
Aim – Fundamental co-ordination and movement skills, an introduction to rallying and playing the game and above all to build confidence and have fun.
Age – 4 to 7/8 years.
Equipment – Low bounce foam or felt covered ball, larger than a tennis ball for slow movement and red coded where possible. Strung rackets 17” – 23”.
Court size – 11m x 5.5m.
Mini Orange
Aim – Fundamentals and playing the game, basic tactics and playing more points/games.
Age – 7/8 years and above (depending on ability and age when started playing).
Equipment – Modified tennis ball of a tennis ball size but softer and lighter, with a lower bounce than a normal tennis ball and orange coded. Strung rackets 23” – 25”.
Court size - 18m x 6.5m (singles) and 18m x 8.23m (doubles).
Mini Green
Aim – Fundamentals, physical skills, tennis skills and matches, encouraging children to be more independent, understanding about warming up, practicing, fitness and health.
Age – 9 years and above (depending on ability and age when started playing).
Equipment – Modified tennis ball of tennis ball size but slightly softer and lighter, with slightly lower bounce and green coded. Strung rackets 25” – 27”.
Court size – Full size singles court (also for doubles).
