In my opinion, Townsend Tennis Club is really thriving at the moment. The playing standard is as high as I can remember, the social side is really buzzing, the finances are healthy, and we have a strong committee to keep the club moving in the right direction.
On the playing side, we had both the Men’s and Ladies 1st teams playing in the top division, and we are equally strong in the lower teams. I would love to see us fielding more teams and allowing more members to play more competitive tennis, and am looking at options that will allow us to do this without impacting on the availability of the courts for social tennis.
Alison Asplin has come on to the committee to take on the social secretary role, and has made an immediate impact. The BBQ was the best attended in many years and we always look forward to her next event, whatever colour it may be!
Through prudent management of the finances in recent years, we have been able to build up sufficient funds to take on the highly expensive replacement of the middle courts, plus the replacement of the floodlights.
Although we would have had to borrow a small amount of money to take on the work this season, Gordon Willis’ efforts on the courts have allowed us to delay the replacement by at least another year, plus we are also benefitting from the courts playing much better now than in recent years. I am pleased to say that we now have all the funds required to tackle the work without needing to borrow from the bank. It is now just a case of choosing the optimum time for this to be done.
The club website has been completely developed over the last few months, and is designed to allow more 2-way communication between members. It is a work in progress, and I would welcome any ideas you may have on how it can be improved.
Finally, my personal thanks go to all the committee members for their time and commitment over the season, and to Gordon Willis and Craig Sears-Brown for helping us out with specific projects. However, we are always looking for new blood and fresh ideas, so please do give me a call if you would like to get more involved in the club.
