ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL SEASON COMPLETED!
Both individually and as a club, Townsend bowlers hit the headlines last season and intend to do even better next season, as our centenary approaches! With one of the best greens in the county we look forward to a long hot summer of success!
Husband and wife team, Bernadette and Clyde Martindill, are our resident County Coaches, with special responsibility both for developing new bowlers and the skills of more experienced players. Clyde`s view is that "Bowls is an easy sport to have fun with, but difficult to become really skillful at. The best way forward is to build on a solid foundation, which is what we aim to provide."
Our formal Open Days for the new season will be announced at the start of next season, at the end of March 2018, but our coaches will in the interim be happy to discuss the requirements of new and experienced bowlers at a time of your choosing. Then when the season starts, with no cost, and no commitment, we will then provide the bowls and the guidance, so you can come and have fun! Places will be, however, limited and booking (or further information) can be made by contacting Peter Thomson on 01727 864453 or via firstname.lastname@example.org
New bowlers, or those with experience of other clubs, perhaps from other parts of the country, will be made most welcome and are invited to come and have a go at this most involving of sports. The days of over-formality in bowling attire are long gone, and if you would like to come along then casual clothing and flat shoes - such as trainers - will be ideal. Bowls is not a difficult sport to enjoy, but, like golf, it rewards practice!
Last season our third midweek gala was held and that attracted teams from no less than 16 different clubs! The date for next year is not yet finalisef, but it promises to be even bigger and better, with almost all the teams competing last year having confirmed their intention to attend next season!
The midweek club bowlers have an "away day" planned - to Whitstable, which will follow on from the template enjoyed last season when we put out six mixed rinks against Tunbridge Wells' finest! After an early start the coach pulled into the City Centre, allowing for sightseeing and lunch, prior to transportation to the bowls club for what turned out to be a tightly fought match, drinks and dinner. This year`s visit is scheduled for a Wednesday in mid August, with rumours already circulating that our midweek captain has his bucket and spade purchased in readiness!
We engage in a wide variety of social events, held in our fantastic club house, which we share with the tennis club, and which also hosts our own darts league team. Our annual presentation night, scheduled for mid October, combines with a race night and the advanced purchases of horses looks like breaking previous records.
Last season we enjoyed excellent results, both in our mid-week friendlies against other local clubs, where we won no less than 21 of our 25 fixtures, and also in our weekend matches. New bowlers have played in all our teams and almost without exception done very well - most importantly all seem have enjoyed the experience!
Success in bowls may well sometimes be measured in awards and trophies, but it also comes from the level of enjoyment and happiness that comes from playing with friends, new and old, and from participation in the sport. Remember, the main aim in bowls may well be to get close to the jack, but it is also to make friends and to have fun.
Finally, a reminder - don`t hesitate to contact Peter (on email@example.com or 01727 864453), or Jane (via 01727 812385) if you`d like to find out more about bowling and Townsend - we`d love to hear from you, and give you a chance to see what it`s all about!
