TOWNSEND BOWLS CLUB of St Albans was established in 1919, and has a long tradition of achievement in Hertfordshire. Over the years, members have represented the Club at National, County and District levels. In 2010 Andrew Briden became the first member to receive International honours when he played in the British Isles Championships - the first international bowler from Hertfordshire for more than a generation!.
The Club is much more than just a competitive body however, and prides itself on the support, guidance and encouragement it gives to bowlers of all levels. With two fully accredited county coaches on board, in the shape of husband and wife team, Bernadette and Clyde Martindill, new bowlers are in safe hands!
The existing clubhouse was opened in 2001 and is recognised as one of the finest in Hertfordshire. The Club is pleased to be able to host County and District events, on its six, or potentially seven, very high quality grass rinks.
The fixture list caters for bowlers of all standards and includes social "roll-ups", mid week and weekend friendly matches and District, County, London & Southern Counties and National competitions.
Many of our members have been successful over the years, as evidenced by our honours boards - both men and ladies. Two of our ladies won the National Championship and went on to win the British Isles Pairs Championship, as well. In 2007, the men's section won the prestigious London & Southern Counties Shield, from more than 100 other selected top clubs, and then went on to repeat the feat in 2013!
With our centenary celebrations looming, a very exciting future is planned!
